Musclecarclub.com - Chevrolet Corvette - History - First Generation
Comments: Chevrolet finally got their sports car right for 1957, as the 1957 Corvette finally gained power to go along with its outstanding styling and road feel. Many Corvette enthusiasts consider the 1957 Corvette was the most aesthetically pleasing body style of the pre-1963 Corvettes, while others believe that it was the best styling of all time. And backing up that beautiful styling was the Corvette's first true powerful engine, a 283 cid V8. A bored out version of the 1956 265 cid V8, the new 283 cid V8 came in four versions. The base form had a four-barrel carb and was rated at 220 bhp. Next came an early fuel injected version rated at 250 bhp and then the dual four-barrel carb 283 rated at 270 bhp. But late in the model year, in May 1957, the true performance version of the 283 made its debut. Sporting an advanced fuel injection system, the new "fuelie" 283 made 283 bhp.

1956 Chevrolet Pickup
Bill Snaith of La Habra, California, was having a truck built at Street Machines by Stedman in Hemet, California, when he joked that he should just buy Bruce Stedman's personal 1956 Chevy pickup. Bruce didn't consider it a joke and quoted a price. Bill drove the truck home that day and has enjoyed it for about a year. In 1994, while it still belonged to Bruce, this 1956 Chevy won the Western Nats at Long Beach, California, as well as the Cal Truck Jamboree in Anaheim, and it was also able to take Best Truck at the Bakersfield Super Chevy show in California.
Crew History
In April of 1963, a Chevrolet panel truck was purchased, and was equipped as a crash truck. This was in use up until a 1974 Ford 1-ton truck was put into service. At this time the Crew acted solely as a non-transport unit, providing extrication, rescue, and first aid until the hearse from the local funeral home arrived to take patients to the hospital. The Crew was the third all volunteer rescue squad chartered in Campbell Co. It serviced an area from the city limits of Lynchburg to Volens on Rt. 501,and from Lynchburg to the town of Altavista on Rt. 29 as well as a large part of Charlotte, Pittsylvania, Halifax and Appomattox counties. Because of the large landmass that the Crew covered and the distance that members resided from the station located in Gladys a second station was erected in community of Naruna and the 1948 Packard hearse was moved there. The Packard was replaced by a 1957 Chevrolet station wagon and that later replaced by a 1968 Ford station wagon. In 1969 a station was constructed in the town of Brookneal, and a new 69 Ford station wagon put into service there. The Crew continued to grow as the 1965 station wagon was replaced with a 1970 Ford station wagon. In 1972, 2 new units, a Ford and a Chevrolet Van were purchased and converted to ambulances. The 1960 Carryall was converted into the crash truck replacing the 1956 Panel Truck. Three months later the old 1956 Chevrolet Panel Truck was returned to service when the Carryall was while responding to a call. In 1973 a new Ford Van and a used 1970 stations was purchased and converted into ambulances.
