Despite the assembly in Korea, styling for the curvy Aveo looks downright Italian due to handiwork of stylists at the Italdesign studios of Giorgetto Giugiaro in Turin. And cabins of both models seem far more spacious than the subcompact dimensions imply.

No one got to test-drive the Daewoo Kalos, which was launched earlier this year, before it was re-christened the Chevrolet Aveo, so almost everything is new. The Kalos was originally developed to replace the Lanos, and although both cars were designed by Italdesign, the new car has a crisper, more modern and European appearance. As a Daewoo, the Kalos would have competed against the other budget Koreans such as the Kia Rio and Hyundais Accent and Getz. As a Chevrolet Aveo however, with the new engine and inclusion of ABS as standard equipment, it is in direct competition with the Toyota Vios. Both cars are similarly priced and share similar dimensions, but the Toyota has wider passenger compartment and a more willing engine.

Much improved with the chrome accented grill and more substantial front fascia. It has to look more substantial than the last Aveo which won 'frumpiest of the year'. Not sure that this car can compete with Hyundai and Kia's offerings. There is a reason that Hyundai and Kia outsold Daewoo (the Aveo is a rebadged Daewoo) year after year. The 2006 looks the same on the Aveo web site. The LT 5-door that priced out at $15,900 for 2005, prices out at $15,895 for 2006 - five bucks less. But, it adds a standard cruise control and 15" wheels and tires instead of 14" as in both previous years. The pricing scheme is somewhat different, adding more things to the base LT. FM and all there is to upgrade is the speaker system. Forget about LEATHER; merely a new cloth seat fabric is introduced in 2006. Trouble with this loaded Aveo is that it is worth about $7,000 less as a trade-in (44% hit) the second you leave the dealer.

New Chevrolet Aveo World Debut
Although a small car, the Aveo has a number of amenities that are generally found in higher-end, higher-priced vehicles. These include tilt steering, a driver's seat armrest, seat-belt height adjusters, power windows, power door locks, intermittent wipers and remote controlled central door locking. The Aveo offers strong occupant protection in the event of an accident. It all centers on the stable passenger cell, which is made predominantly of high-strength steel. The B-pillar moves like a pendulum rather than being folded and protruding into the passenger compartment.

The Chevrolet Aveo body was created, believe it or not, in the Giugiaro Italdesign studio in Turin, Italy. And it shows, especially in the smooth sedan, which is better looking than the Hyundai Accent or Rio. As sleek little hatchbacks go, the Aveo five-door isn't quite as good looking as Toyota's Scion xA, but it holds its own. The taillights especially, chunky and efficient, have a nice physical edge to them. The roofline is rounded, sloping back to meet the optional spoiler over the liftgate. There are character lines running back from the front wheelwell to the rear, which may or may not add character. The Aveo interior is better than you might expect for such a low-cost car. The seats offer a solid fit and are quite comfortable, with high-density foam under the LS's deluxe cloth in a tweedy pattern. There's a good four-spoke steering wheel, finished in matt black. The instrument panel is simple, while still presenting the important information in big gauges: speedo, tach, fuel and coolant temp. There's some silly pseudo carbon fiber in the door handles, and the golfball grain on the dash looks rough; but Cadillacs have it too. There are a number of thoughtful slots and pockets for storing things, including a lighted glovebox.

2006 Chevrolet Aveo Car Review - Edmunds.com
Chevy's pint-sized Aveo gets a few changes for 2006. Safety is improved thanks to standard side airbags, new dual-stage front airbags and longer-length rear seatbelts. Other updates include new options like alloy wheels and cruise control, a retuned suspension for better steering response, and tilt-adjustable front headrests. The Chevrolet Aveo comes with three-point seatbelts for all five passengers with pre-tensioners in the front. ABS is optional on LS and LT models, and it includes Electronic Brakeforce Distribution for shorter stopping distances. Side airbags are standard across the board for 2006. Subcompact cars have a well-deserved reputation for poor handling and wobbly rides. While the Chevrolet Aveo is certainly no thrill ride, it provides better overall vehicle dynamics than most of its competitors. The steering is direct, the suspension well tuned and the standard engine - while loud and buzzy - is adequate for day-to-day commuting.
