The Midgate's operation is complicated on paper but simple and intuitive in person. With the Midgate closed, the Avalanche has a five-foot-three-inch bed and Suburban-sized seating for six (or five, with the available front captain's chairs). For longer items, the rear bench seat and Midgate fold flat in seconds, creating a four-by-eight-foot trunk that's protected from the elements by the rear window and standard hard tonneau. For bulky items, both the tonneau and the rear window can be removed (the window stores on the Midgate).

Chevy Avalance The Chevrolet Avalanche takes something old (fold-down rear seats), something new (removable rear window glass), and puts them into an unusual place - a pickup truck. The Avalanche is, essentially, a crew cab pickup with removable rear glass and fold-down rear seats to effectively extend the bed by a few feet, so drivers to have a large cab without making the truck unmanageably long. General Motors has done it once again. The Avalanche is an amazingly well executed idea, so simple it's brilliant, and currently unique among pickups and SUVs. It's still a work truck - so if you want one for transporting your family, get a Chevy Venture or Dodge Caravan - but it's a remarkably practical work truck, and it still beats anything on the Ford lots.

Yes, you've seen short-bed trucks before-and they aren't long enough to hold standard-size plywood or even most skis. So Chevy-which wants to sell 100,000 Avalanches a year-went further, and gave the Avalanche truck bed two tailgates. The tailgate at the back works just like a standard-issue pickup unit, but at the side near the passenger compartment, another tailgate flips into the cabin. When you do this, you also flip the second row of seats down and forward, like you would for the pass-through in a sedan.
