2006 Chevrolet HHR LT Review
Obviously a take-off on the Chrysler PT Cruiser, the Chevrolet HHR compact car has a charm of its own. The PT Cruiser and HHR are very similar vehicles, with nearly identical engines, nearly identical dimensions, and nearly identical performance. Both are built in Mexico. Despite more than 63 cubic feet of cargo volume (with the rear seats folded), it's always nice to find smaller storage areas in the cockpit that are more accessible. The HHR has a couple, including a neat tray on the top of the dash that's covered and deep.

Phil Zak, HHR designer, said the "retro-inspired" vehicle is expected to attract both young and old buyers. Young buyers will buy the HHR because it's "unique in its appearance" and can be customized, he said. Despite the comparison with the old Chevy Suburban sport-utility vehicle, the HHR uses the underlying front-wheel-drive platform of the Chevrolet Cobalt small coupe and sedan, not a truck or SUV platform. Modern HHR amenities include audio systems that come standard with an integrator for easy use with Apple's iPod. XM satellite radio and remote start are offered as options. Some safety features-side-curtain airbags and traction control-also are optional, not standard, on every HHR model, including the top-of-the-line HHR 2LT that has a starting MSRP of just under $19,000.

Compared to the PT - which gets a modest exterior facelift and a nice new interior for 2006 - the HHR is some seven inches longer, two inches wider and two inches taller on a half-inch longer wheelbase. Ironically, HHR replaces the ill-conceived Pontiac Aztek at GM's Ramos Arizpe, Mexico , plant. GM gets criticized when its innovation flops, and when it doesn't copy competitors' good ideas (300C, new Mustang) as well as when it does.

CHEVROLET'S SECOND STAB at the retro-cute market arrives next year in the form of the 2006 HHR. These HHR spy shots arrived at about the same time as sales figures for the far more expensive SSR pickup revealed that Chevy's initial retro offering is suffering through a brutal sales slump. Piggybacking on the successful formula pioneered by the Chrysler PT Cruiser, HHR carries retro styling cues, in this case from the 1949 Chevrolet Suburban, built on an existing small-car chassis. The underpinnings are from the new Chevy Cobalt.

Some vehicles defy definition. They're neither sedan nor wagon, nor SUV. That is the case with the HHR Concept. The HHR Concept took an already great-looking vehicle in it's production form and converted it into a wide body 2 door. The 2006 Chevy HHR has a distinct design that fuses elements of the 1949 Chevy Suburban the original utility vehicle and the SSR roadster. The HHR is a crossover vehicle that combines a small sedan and a small SUV that is both uniquely styled and highly functional. It is built on the same solid platform as the new Chevy Cobalt. The HHR is what you want it to be, whether youre hauling band equipment around the country or hauling your friends across town, said Lori Queen, GM vehicle line executive for small car.

By a curious blend of fortunate timing and prescient planning, Chevrolet and Jeep are rolling out two new 2006 SUVs that can indeed be construed as the germ of a response to never-again-bargain-priced fuel. Chevy's new HHR disguises econocar frugality beneath sexy togs that are actually supremely functional.

At a recent management meeting, General Motors North America President Gary Cowger revealed this illustration and announced the HHR ("High Heritage Roof") crossover will be offered in 2005. Described a spiritual cross between the Suburban and SSR, the HHR numbers among the nine all-new Chevy products to be shown in the next 20 months.
