1999 Chevrolet Lumina - The Car Connection
Even GM admits that the Lumina had one of the most difficult start-ups in company history. Chevy built only four-door Luminas when the model was introduced. They were followed by the Lumina Coupe about eight months later. When the Lumina was introduced, it did no better than the Celebrity - the model it replaced - against the likes of market leaders such as the Taurus, Accord and Camry. It badly trailed all three in sales. This was clearly disappointing for Chevrolet, since Lumina always has been a solid car, only needing some feature refinement and marketing to turn it around. When it was re-worked two years ago and the Monte Carlo model added, the old magic started to come back. Now the Monte Carlo Coupe is No.
Popular Mechanics - Chevrolet Lumina
And, for those who think the Lumina's 4-wheel strut suspension isn't up to today's standards, in that same comparison test the Lumina ran the slalom quicker than any other car there, and the group included some serious names, such as the Taurus, Accord, Camry and Intrepid. More importantly, when you're out on the road, a Lumina is just fun to toss around, more fun than people would think a Lumina should be. But as your parents used to remind you, you don't get something for nothing. And the Lumina's low price has to have its basis somewhere-basically the inside of the car. The interior is a bit more chintzy than the passenger compartments of those higher-price spreads that the Lumina competes against.

CanadianDriver: Used Vehicle Review - Chevrolet Lumina, 1995-1999
Consumer Reports recommends against the Lumina as a used-car buy, citing numerous trouble spots. The Lumina also gets a less-than-glowing rating in the Canadian Automobile Association's Autopinion Vehicle Ownership Survey. Oddly, the Buick Regal and Century receive significantly better ratings in both publications, despite using many of the same major components as the Lumina. The second-generation Lumina is a car that unfortunately gets little respect. Sure, it's a little dull compared to some of its import rivals, but its poor reliability ratings should be taken with a grain of salt.
1998 Chevrolet Lumina
With traits like those, you won't be surprised to learn that the Lumina gets little respect from car buffs. Neither will you be surprised to learn that the Lumina was among the top-10 cars in sales last year. The Lumina has one of the lowest theft rates, as well. All Luminas have as standard equipment the effective PASS-Key II anti-theft system that disables the engine if someone tries to start the car without the correct key. All radios above the base system include a TheftLock security feature. The $17,795 base Lumina has a solid menu of standard features: dual air bags, air conditioning, automatic transmission, power door locks, rear child locks, height-adjustable seat belts up front and child comfort adjustment loops on the rear belts.
cars.com: 2000 Chevrolet Lumina Summary
Lumina was formerly one of Chevrolet's volume models, but the end is in sight for this front-wheel-drive sedan. A full-size Impala sedan arrived this year as a roomier addition to the roster, and the midsize Malibu sedan is a newer design, making the Lumina expendable.
