The Hindu Business Line : Chevrolet Optra: Luxury redefined
DECADES after it left Indian shores, the Chevrolet brand and the internationally acclaimed bow-tie logo returned to the country riding on the Isuzu Impreza, re-engineered and re-christened the Chevrolet Forester. The Chevrolet Optra is GM India's second step towards extending the brand's sweep in the segmented Indian passenger car market and is also a furtherance of the company's plans to offer more affordable vehicles. This will also ensure that the Opel brand can be given an even more premium positioning in future. The new C2 or C+ segment (as the company would like to call it) Chevrolet Optra has been developed by GM on a combined GM-Daewoo platform, according to company officials. Visually, the car's close resemblance to the Daewoo Nubira is partly explained by the new platform's lineage.

The compact Optra sedan is the most conservative of the three Chevoos, offering styling that could put sheep out of business as sleep inducers. It's not an ugly design by any means, it just won't get many people excited.

What is a test report without a few comparisons? Get this straight - what powers the Optra is not as powerful or free revving or character-full an engine as the one in the Toyota Corolla. But it is more than a match for, say, what you get under the hood of a Skoda Octavia. That means, the cliché be pardoned, the best of two worlds.

But the auto makes for a satisfying long distance driver providing you are not expecting a super-quick response on kick-down. With its 109 bhp on tap, the Optra has a strong mid-range that allows for safe and strong overtaking. With maximum torque peaking at 4,000rpm, the Optra wafts past slower traffic comfortably and unstrained from just 3,000rpm. Booting down the accelerator at these engine speeds actually provides a surprisingly sporty induction drone that belies the Optra's relatively conservative appearance. It's the Optra's excellent front and rear independent suspension (worked on by Lotus) that really seals the vehicle as a great value car when taken as an entire package. Like the Optra 5, the MacPherson strut set up has been 'tuned' for European tastes, which is no bad thing in the local context. While the gas shock absorbers - the same items as found in the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, no less - offer excellent cushioning over less well paved surfaces, the taught suspension allows you to throw this sedan around without the anticipated 'wallow' that is often incumbent in some of its Japanese competitors. It's a sharp drive.

July 2003, New Delhi: General Motors India (GM India) today launched the Chevrolet Optra. The four-door notchback provides a new choice in India's growing midsize sedan market. Based on a new platform from GM Daewoo Auto & Technology, the Optra is being manufactured domestically by GM India at its Gujarat facility. "The Chevrolet Optra represents an extension of GM's commitment to providing more for less," said Aditya Vij, President and Managing Director of GM India. "The Optra has been tailored to meet the changing tastes, lifestyles and needs of car buyers in India. The front-wheel drive Optra was penned by world-renowned Italian design house Pininfarina. The result is a gracefully proportioned vehicle with a distinctive European flair. The look is modern and dynamic, yet simple, refined and well balanced. The Optra has a wedge shape with clearly accentuated shoulders. The roof line drops down to the high rear section almost like that of a coupe. Prominent wheel arches give the Optra a solid stance.

The design flair in the Optra is there for all to see. The V-shaped bonnet leads to the three-part grille, which bears a strong resemblance to the Daewoo family face. The bumper is clearly defined and taut, with integrated fog lamps. But what really gets your attention are the wing-shaped headlights, with clearly visible projector lamps. From the side, the sweeping roofline gives a clean silhouette, but the strong wheel arches accentuate the need for bigger wheels. Fit and finish, even on this early production model, is impeccable, with tight shut lines and a flawless paint job. Under the skin of this super-stiff structure is a lot of engineering designed to make the Optra as refined as any of its rivals.
