Chevrolet's Early V-8 Pickup Era ended after only a five year run, which compares to nine years for the Advanced Design Pickup Era. The only 1959 pickup carried over was the car based El Camino. This was the El Camino's last year until 1964. One of management's key motives for a new truck series was to get improved market coverage. Only the 1960 and 1961 Chevrolet pickups had the front styling shown on this 1961 C10 Fleetside pickup. The only appearance to differentiate between the 1960 and 1961 trucks were that the parking light ovals were open around the spinners in 1961 whereas in the 1960 models this area was entirely closed. The C1434 truck shown is powered by the 283 cubic inch Trademaster V-8 engine. For 1961 Chevrolet introduced the Corvair 95 lie of short wheelbase, rear engine light-duty trucks. Anyone who has ever driven a mid-to-late-'50's Chevrolet pickup equipped with a factory suspension and drivetrain knows they are not the smoothest and best handling vehicles on the road. Chevrolet SSR logo One of the happier results of a new spurt of special-purpose cars and trucks is the Chevrolet SSR, a truck with almost universal appeal, thanks to its attractive design, formidable performance, and pleasant ride. The exterior is straight out of Chevy's pickup-truck past, with the rounded curves and low styling of an era when pickups were more likely to have a straight-six than any other engine, with modern Chevrolet styling touches as well. The flowing lines have a minimal impact on the functionality of the truck, which retains a small but usable bed and has ample room for two inside (which used to be the norm for pickups). The striking headlights put out a well-focused, strong beam pattern, despite the chrome that seems to split them in two (the top half is the headlights, and the bottom half is the bright lights. Thankfully, the standard Chevy pickup instrument panel was replaced by a more sporty, if less informative, setup with deeply recessed gauges - a big speedometer going to 140 mph, an equally big tachometer, and smaller gas gauge, oil pressure, and thermometer.

The first step in setting cars and trucks on separate paths had occurred in 1936 when a V'd front windshield first appeared on Chevrolet's car line. Trucks stayed with the flat windshield through 1938. Now, in 1939, trucks too received the more modern, two-piece windshield, but without attempt to establish more than vague similarity between the car and truck lines. A prominent vertical grille, composed of 17 chrome bars that curved back toward the sides of the hood, marked the divergence of car and truck styling. This new grille's massive design conveyed a sense of power and ruggedness-exactly the impression a truck should give. The Chevrolet name appeared in modern script on a wider strip that wrapped around the top of the grille. The sharply V'd hood remained unchanged from the previous year, except that the sides now contained a single horizontal louver instead of three. Also, the front and rear fenders arched an inch higher, and the running boards were made longer and wider. These changes harmonized with the new wider, longer cab which Chevy trucks would use with no noticeable external changes through 1947. Along with the larger exterior dimensions, Chevrolet designers also increased the cab glass area for greater visibility and expanded the door openings for easier entry and exit. The Coupe Pickup first appeared in 1936 and lasted until 1942. Based on the passenger car Master 85 Business Coupe, the Coupe Pickup featured a removable pickup box stuffed into what otherwise was the car's trunk. A trunk lid for converting the vehicle into a coupe when desired came with the package.

If you took upwards of $250,000 to a well-known custom car builder and specified a unique vehicle with a more-than-passing resemblance to a Chevy pickup from the late 1940s, you might get something much like the SSR. The SSR certainly would look right at home on display at a custom car show, next to the latest creations from the best-known builders. But, although it is based on a concept vehicle, it's a real production truck made from easily available parts and with a real factory warrantee.
