Customers who lease a Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac G6 or Buick LaCrosse can return the car with no further obligation if they do so before they've driven 12,000 miles, according to a memo GM sent to dealers obtained by The Detroit News. A $1,500 down payment made in cash or trade would be forfeited. Cash rebates on most 2005 models has been increased by $500 to $1,000. Last month, GM was offering $1,000 rebates on most 2005 models. The range of rebates now runs from $500 to as much as $3,500. The $3,500 rebates are available only on the Chevrolet Venture and Pontiac Montana minivans, both models that are being discontinued. Most rebates fall into the $500 to $1,500 range. Rebates are available on vehicles from "traditional" GM brands such as Buick and Chevrolet. Buyers of the Explorer, Excursion and Expedition SUVs and the Freestar minivan can get a $1,000 rebate plus no-interest financing. They can chose the continuing incentive of a $3,000 rebate or a no-interest five-year loan.

One of the Tracker's SUV competitors, the 2004 Mazda Tribute, and the 2004 Ford Escape are both offering cash rewards of $2,500. If a sedan is a better fit, then consider the Nissan Altima. It comes with a $1,500 cash-back incentive. Buyers can also find great deals on 2004 models ahead of a major redesign - even if the new cars aren't out yet. Consider the Ford Mustang and the Chevrolet Corvette. While the newly styled vehicles aren't expected to hit showrooms until this fall, the manufacturers are already offering incentives to help move the 2004s. Those who prefer the Mustang can get up to a $3,000 rebate. And the Corvette, which rarely comes with incentives, includes $2,000 in cash back to consumers. But act fast.
