The 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 receives a new front-end appearance, with a revised grille design and a power dome hood. The grille is a dual-port design with a prominent gold bowtie, the power dome hood is similar to the Silverado 3500 hood, and a body-color bumper top cap is added. The Silverado 1500 Extended Cab is now available with a short 5-foot 8-inch bed, the same bed as the Crew Cab, with LT trim and the Vortec 5300 V8 engine rated at 295 horsepower and 335 lb-ft of torque. The Silverado is beginning to lose ground to newer competitors. The optional four-wheel drive is a selectable full-time system, a plus. Extended-cab versions have a usable rear seat, a rarity in this class.

The choice for best full-size pickup is not as clear as it was three years ago, when the Chevrolet Silverado and the GMC Sierra appeared to be the leaders of the pack. Since then, Ford has introduced an all-new F-150, Dodge has re-engineered the Ram, Toyota has added a Crew Cab model to its Tundra line, and Nissan has rolled out the appropriately named Titan. There isn't a dog among them. Yet Silverado still rides as well or better than any of them, and it handles well. It's quick and it's comfortable. Boxed and hydroformed frame rails give Silverado a strong, rigid platform. It is, as the advertising tagline says, like a rock. Silverado's interior was significantly updated in 2003, and so was its electrical system. Quadrasteer, GM's heavy-duty four-wheel-steering, is available for a number of different models, improving maneuverability in tight quarters or when pulling a trailer.

The Silverado 1500 can comfortably carry five people, yet tow a fairly heavy trailer with ease. On the other hand, those who think the space and overhead DVD system make it an ideal family hauler should think twice, unless they vacation with a trailer. The Silverado is more comfortable than most big pickups, but it is a big pickup, and the suspension jostles you along unless it's loaded with heavy stuff in back. Bumps are not too shocking, but there's a lot of bouncing and busyness even on relatively smooth roads. Gas mileage is also an issue; the Silverado is competitive with all other full-sized pickups, but as a class, these are not fuel-efficient vehicles for anything other than heavy-duty hauling and towing.
