2005 Chevy Equinox Sport Utility Road Test -- From Truckworld Online!®
The Equinox also impresses with a sense of style that has been lacking some of GM's new products. The lines of the Equinox are truly graceful; looking more upscale than a vehicle in this class typically should look. Chevy Equinox Also, the windshield is deeply recessed between the leading edge of the A-pillers. Chevy's designer says this was due to the chassis frame design, which stems from the Saturn VUE, and the desire to provide a steeper slant to the A-pillar's leading edge.
Chevy Equinox and Land Rover Freelander
The reason? Because, these do-almost-everything-vehicles provide just what consumers want. Sure, sales are down right now, but they will recover as more economical vehicles enter the mix. SUVs carry people, haul stuff, pull stuff, can go off-roading , provide superior handling than many cars, etc. Fortunately, not all are gas guzzlers either. Chevrolets Equinox and the Land Rover Freelander are two that come to mind. L V6 that produces 185hp. The engine is paired with a five-speed automatic transmission; no manual transmission is available. A traction control system is standard with the front wheel drive Equinox while all models come equipped with ABS and electric steering. Want better reliability information? Want to really know what difference it will make if you buy an Equinox rather than something else? It's coming in the form of "times in the shop" and "days in the shop" stats. Exterior styling is critical in this image-driven segment. Although car-based SUVs aren't designed for serious off-road use, they must still look capable of it. Yet at the same time a little cuteness doesn't hurt, as many are purchased by women. The Equinox might achieve the difficult combination of rugged and cute better than any SUV to date. With so much legroom, why buy a midsize TrailBlazer? The TrailBlazer does offer a bit more shoulder room, but the major reasons would include towing (the Equinox is only rated up to 3,500 pounds) and more off-road capability.
usnews.com: Auto reviews: 2005 Chevrolet Equinox (6/29/04)
General Motors has had an SUV blitz on for the past few years, as it pedals hard to catch up with the success of the Ford Explorer, the Dodge Durango, and the Nissan Exterra. But gaps remain-at least in GM's offerings-and so Chevrolet has added another sport ute. The Equinox comes at just the right time, since it fills out the lower end of GM's SUV lineup. There it will take on popular vehicles like the Toyota RAV4 and the Ford Escape. The Equinox is kind of a TrailBlazer lite. It shares some of the big SUV's styling cues, such as the muscular haunches and the overstuffed hood. And it's based on the same chassis as the Saturn Vue. Yet the Equinox is arguably more manageable and user-friendly than either of those vehicles. The interior is not lavish, but it is a distinct improvement on the cheap-feeling appointments in the Vue and, for that matter, in the Ford Escape. The Equinox incorporates some of the latest gizmos for comfort and storage as well, such as rear seats that slide forward and back, to maximize legroom or cargo space.

With the 2005 Chevrolet Equinox, General Motors finally has a compact SUV to challenge the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. It's bigger inside and out than most of the SUVs in this class, and that's deliberate. Like the Honda, Toyota and Ford products, the Equinox is car-based, using the new GM Theta front-wheel-drive architecture and adapting it for all-wheel-drive versions.
Chevrolet Equinox Review - Motor Point
The Equinox replaces the slow selling Tracker and is a much more competent and complete vehicle. It is a class leader in room and rides well. Interestingly, it is the first car-based sport utility in Chevy's history using the same chassis as General Motors' mini-vans. It is available in two-wheel or all-wheel drive with the latter system diverting power to the rear wheels when needed. Dad's view: What is exceptional about the Equinox is the cargo room. Not only is there 69 cubic feet of it, but Chevrolet has made the right decision by sacrificing some of the space to place the spare tire inside. This is a vast and important improvement over the competition that hangs their extra tire on the rear hatch door making it heavy to open, blocking rear visibility, and encouraging vandals. Stopping is good and the four-wheel independent suspension provide plenty of softness thanks to the combination of a unitized body with full-length frame rails and isolated subframes to reduce harshness. It works, and the MacPherson strut front suspension and rear coil springs, seem to offer the ride quality most people like in such vehicles. The Equinox has vented front disc brakes with dual piston calipers, and drum brakes in the back and they work satisfactorily.

Price as tested is $22,890, including $1,330 in options and a $565 destination charge. Equinox-type vehicles, by comparison, are city-suburban dwellers wearing cowboy and cowgirl outfits at a masquerade ball. Many look like rough, tough trucks. Indeed, Chevrolet seems to have gone out of its way to give the Equinox that persona. But that is just marketing imagery. That is not to suggest that the Equinox has substandard performance on the highway, or in hauling duties. It is commendably capable in both areas. It accelerates with competence and handles well within the context of its tall body structure and high ground clearance (eight inches above ground for the front-wheel-drive models). It can be equipped to tow up to 3,500 pounds - at the expense of acceleration and handling.
