PM Owners Report: Chevrolet Impala
When Chevrolet let the Impala fade away back in 1996, it basically scuttled the division's flagship. The resulting hole in Chevy's model lineup was doubly noticeable because the 1994-96 Impala SS had finally gotten the formula right. Sorely missed not only by the public but by taxi companies and police departments, the Impala made a comeback in June 1999 as a new, smaller, front-wheel-drive sedan. And, two years later, Impala shares GM's W-Car platform with the Monte Carlo, Pontiac's Grand Prix and Buick's Century and Regal. The Impala competes in a tough market. It goes head-to-head with Detroit's other six-passenger sedans, notably the Dodge Intrepid and the still-rear-wheel-drive Ford Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquis.

2006 Chevrolet Impala - The Car Connection
Few who saw Chevy's new Impala at the Detroit North American International Auto Show realized how new it really was. The car it replaces has been quietly competent and successful - outselling Chrysler's hot 300 by more than 50,000 units during the first half of this year - but bland in looks, moderate in performance and about as exciting as yesterday's beer. The Impala is assembled at GM's Oshawa, Ontario, Canada plant, recently cited as the highest-quality facility in North and South America for the third time in four years by J. D. Power. It's also the most efficient North American plant according to the 2005 Harbour Report.

Chevrolet: Revamped Impala has winning formula
But Chevy officials needn't worry. The verdict is already in. Auto journalists are almost unanimous in declaring the all-new 2006 Chevy Impala a major improvement over the already respected model it replaces.

Monte Carlo, TrailBlazer, and the two Malibus, will "be the top-level performer for an individual line," Campbell notes. "It'll be competitive. It may not always be at the top" versus the competition. So if the 303-horsepower Impala SS doesn't take the title of best-performing front-drive midsize sedan under $30,000, it'll at least be the best-performing large-midsize sedan at Chevy. The 391-horsepower TrailBlazer SS nearly matches up with the 415-horsepower Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 to take on BMW X5s and Porsche Cayennes. GM figures that selling maybe 125,000 SS models per year works better for Chevy than selling a few thousand best-in-class performers the average Joe can't afford or can't find because of limited production. "Look at what happened to Lightning," Campbell says of the SVT Ford F-150. "They had high-performance specifications. Guess what?
